Who invented 30 second commercials? While they’re a good idea in theory, I don’t think they work. Maybe it’s just because it’s not my strong point. Though I can hide in my office most of the day in a t-shirt and shorts, every once in a while I need to change into something more presentable and go network with people.
Today I went to a BOUNCE meeting. I gave an “expanded 30 second commercial” which was 10 minutes. I did it on a topic of whether or not you need a virtual assistant and how to choose one. After doing my presentation, though, I got the feeling people were expecting it to be more of a 10 minute commercial on me. Hmm, I am not the ideal solution to everyone’s VA needs. I have a specific type of client that I usually work for: professional speakers, authors, and those in the real estate or financial services industry. Most of the tasks I do are project management oriented or editorial projects. Transcription, writing, editing, proofreading, research and consulting-type work. I realize some entrepreneurs need “generalist” VAs, or those who do more typically administrative assistant type duties. That’s not me.
I think if I did this presentation again, I would change the focus a little. Live and learn, right?
Another interesting topic that was brought up was customer service and our general consensus was how frustrating it is when you call customer service somewhere and all you get is an automated system. It’s just not the same as a human voice on the other end. Fortunately there are VAs that provide this service (though not me!).
My next speaking gig is August 4th at BOUNCE and I’m doing a presentation on my co-authored book, “Write It Right: The Ground Rules for Self-Editing Like the Pros.” I want to make it a fun and interactive session, so I’m going to put a lot more time into preparing for that presentation. I’ve gotten so busy right now, I actually told someone today I couldn’t meet with them for a month. Wow, never thought I’d be THAT busy this soon. It’s a good feeling, but soon I’ll need a VA of my own!
Until next time…
